How to Quantify Achievements on Your Resume: Wording Examples for 15 Roles

By Tailor My CV Teamยทยท12 min read

"Responsible for managing a team" is the most common sentence on CVs โ€” and one of the weakest. It describes a job, not what you did in it. "Led 4 engineers, cut checkout abandonment 28%" says the same thing with evidence. This guide gives you the formula for rewriting experience bullets, before/after wording examples for 15 common roles, and a method for finding numbers when you think you have none.

Why Duties Don't Get Interviews

Recruiters already know what a project manager or nurse does. Your CV repeating the job description tells them nothing about whether you did it well. What they are looking for is evidence of scale (how big), results (what changed) and standing (how you compared).

Quantified bullets also score better with CV checkers and ATS ranking โ€” measurable impact is one of the core content checks. See how CV checkers score your content.

The Formula: Action + Metric + Outcome

Action verb + what you did + metric + outcome

ActionRebuilt
Whatthe onboarding email sequence
Metricfrom 9% to 13%
Outcometrial-to-paid conversion

"Rebuilt the onboarding email sequence, lifting trial-to-paid conversion from 9% to 13%."

The five types of metric, in rough order of impact:

  • Money: revenue generated, costs saved, budget managed ("ยฃ40K/month", "$310K saved")
  • Percentage change: growth, reduction, improvement ("cut errors 35%")
  • Time: faster delivery, hours saved, deadlines ("from 10 to 6 days")
  • Volume and scale: people, customers, tickets, sites ("team of 12", "1,200 respondents")
  • Rank: relative performance ("#2 of 14 reps", "top 5% nationally")

Where to Find Numbers When You Think You Have None

Most people who say "my job doesn't have numbers" have not looked in the right places. Work through these questions for each role:

  1. How many? People managed or trained, customers served, tickets closed, products launched, sites covered, documents processed.
  2. How often? Daily calls, weekly reports, monthly closes โ€” frequency shows volume.
  3. How much? Budget you handled, contract values, revenue of the accounts or product you touched.
  4. How fast? Turnaround times, deadlines met, time saved by a process you changed.
  5. Compared to what? Before vs after you arrived, vs target, vs team average.
  6. What would have happened without you? Costs avoided, risks caught, complaints prevented.

Where to look: old performance reviews, sales or CRM reports, team dashboards, emails congratulating you, project close-out documents, your LinkedIn recommendations, and job ads for your previous role (which often state team size and budget).

Honest estimates are fine

If you don't have exact data, estimate conservatively and signal it: "~60 tickets per day", "approximately 200 customers". You must be able to explain the number in an interview. Never invent figures โ€” recruiters check, and reference calls can expose them.

Action Verbs That Replace "Responsible For"

Leadership: Led, Directed, Mentored, Built (a team), Oversaw, Coached
Growth: Increased, Grew, Expanded, Launched, Won, Generated
Efficiency: Reduced, Cut, Streamlined, Automated, Consolidated, Accelerated
Creation: Designed, Developed, Introduced, Established, Wrote, Rebuilt
Analysis: Analysed, Identified, Diagnosed, Forecast, Audited, Modelled
Influence: Negotiated, Secured, Persuaded, Partnered, Presented, Championed

Use each verb no more than twice across your whole CV โ€” repetition is one of the content issues CV checkers flag most often.

Applying the Same Wording to Your Summary

Your professional summary should borrow your single strongest metric. It turns a generic opener into a specific one:

Before

"Results-driven sales professional with a proven track record of success."

After

"B2B SaaS account executive who closed ยฃ1.2M in new business last year at 127% of quota, specialising in mid-market fintech."

FAQ: Quantifying Achievements

How do you quantify achievements on a resume?

Use the formula action verb + what you did + metric + outcome. Start with a strong verb, name the task, attach a number (volume, money, percentage, time or scale), and finish with the business result โ€” for example, "Rebuilt onboarding emails, lifting trial-to-paid conversion from 9% to 13%."

What if my job has no numbers?

Every job has numbers if you look at scale (how many people, customers, tickets, products), frequency (daily, weekly), time (deadlines met, hours saved), money (budget handled, costs avoided) or rank (top performer, first to do something). Estimates are acceptable if they are honest and defensible โ€” use "~" or "approximately".

Should every bullet point have a number?

No. Aim for numbers in at least half of your bullets, prioritising the top two or three in each role. A bullet without a number can still show impact through scope or outcome ("selected to lead the company's first GDPR audit").

How many bullet points per job on a resume?

Three to six for recent and relevant roles, one to two for older or less relevant ones. Each bullet should be one to two lines long.

Can I estimate numbers on my resume?

Yes, if the estimate is reasonable and you can explain how you got it in an interview. Round conservatively, and use "approximately" or "~" where precision is not possible. Never invent figures.
