US Resume Format 2026: What American Employers Actually Want

The American job market moves fast and the resume is your most important tool. Whether you are applying to a Fortune 500 company in New York, a tech startup in San Francisco, or a healthcare system in Chicago, the expectations are consistent — and very different from what works in the UK, Canada, or Germany.

Resume vs CV: The American Distinction

In the United States, a resume is a 1–2 page professional document used to apply for most jobs. A CV (curriculum vitae) is a longer academic document used specifically for faculty positions, medical roles, and research applications. If you are applying to anything in a corporate, technology, finance, or non-profit context, you need a resume — not a CV.

This is important for international applicants: submitting a multi-page European "CV" for a US corporate role will often result in an immediate rejection because it signals unfamiliarity with American hiring norms.

Name, phone, email, LinkedIn URL, city and state (you do not need a full street address). Add your GitHub or portfolio URL if relevant to the role. No photo, no date of birth, no Social Security number.

Summary Statement (Optional)

A 2–3 line paragraph below your contact details that summarises your experience and value proposition. More effective than an Objective Statement (which states what you want, not what you offer). For entry-level applicants, skip this section entirely and let your education and experience speak.

Work Experience

Reverse-chronological order. For each role: job title, company name, city/state, dates (month and year). Under each role, write 3–6 bullet points that lead with action verbs and quantify results.

American resumes are numbers-driven. Every bullet point should answer the question: "So what?" If you cannot quantify something in dollars, percentages, users, or time saved, try to qualify it with scope ("managed a team of 12", "owned the enterprise sales pipeline").

Education

A brief, scannable list of technical skills, tools, and certifications. Separate hard skills from soft skills if the list is long. ATS systems scan this section heavily for keyword matching.
