Saudi Arabia Cover Letter Format 2026

Tone: Very Formal and Respectful

The Saudi business culture places a high value on respect, formality, and measured confidence. Your cover letter should be significantly more formal than a UAE or UK equivalent. Address the hiring manager with their full title where known ("Dear Dr. Al-Qahtani" or "Dear Hiring Manager"). Never use first names in a salutation. Avoid casual language, contractions, or colloquial expressions. The tone should be respectful and professional throughout — even when applying to global multinationals with Saudi offices, the cultural context means a more formal register is consistently better received.

Islamic Greeting Option

For applications to conservative sectors, government entities, Saudi institutions, or organisations with predominantly Saudi national staff, opening with "بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم" (Bismillah) before the main body of the letter is welcomed and culturally appropriate. This is optional but can signal cultural awareness and respect. For multinational offices or fully secular private sector contexts, a standard formal opening is more appropriate. Use your judgement based on the nature of the organisation.

Structure and Length

One page only. Three to four paragraphs:

1. Opening: Reference the specific role title and organisation. State your interest directly and professionally. Lead with your most relevant credential or experience.
2. Body (one to two paragraphs): Connect your experience and qualifications to the specific requirements of the role. If you have Saudi or GCC experience, state it explicitly. Reference Vision 2030 sector alignment where genuinely relevant — but only if it reflects real experience or aspiration. Forced alignment is obvious and counterproductive.
3. Closing: Express genuine interest and respect for the organisation. State your Iqama status and availability (as applicable). A formal closing formula — "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application at your convenience" — is preferred over overly assertive closings.

Bilingual Cover Letter

For government, semi-government, Saudi Aramco, SABIC, Ministry roles, or any organisation with significant Arabic-language operations, submitting a bilingual cover letter (English + Arabic) is a strong competitive differentiator. The Arabic version should be professionally translated or written — do not rely on machine translation for a formal document. The Arabic letter should be right-to-left (RTL) formatted, written in formal Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), and should not be a literal word-for-word translation but a culturally adapted version of your letter.

Iqama Status for Expats

Expatriate candidates must mention their residency (Iqama) status in the cover letter. Include: whether you currently hold an Iqama, whether it is transferable (with or without NOC from current employer), and your expected availability. For example: "I currently hold a transferable Iqama (no NOC required) and am available to commence within 30 days." This information directly affects the hiring timeline and is a top consideration for Saudi recruiters.
