How Long Should a CV Be in 2026? One Page vs Two, by Country
The honest answer to "how long should a resume be?" is: it depends on where you are applying and how much relevant experience you have. A one-page resume is the norm in New York; a two-page CV is the norm in London; a German application includes a short Lebenslauf inside a full application pack; and a Gulf CV often adds a personal details section that changes the maths. This guide gives you the rule for your experience level and for the country you are applying to.
The Short Answer
CV Length by Experience Level
Students, graduates and career starters: 1 page
With limited experience, one well-filled page is stronger than two thin ones. Focus on education, relevant projects, internships and skills. See our graduate CV template and no-experience resume guide.
Mid-career (3–10 years): 1 or 2 pages, depending on country
This is where regional conventions matter most. A US recruiter expects a mid-career resume on one page; a UK or Gulf recruiter expects two. If you have more relevant achievements than fit on one page, two is fine almost everywhere outside the US.
Senior professionals (10+ years): 2 pages
Two pages is universally accepted at this level. The challenge is not length — it is editing. Summarise roles older than 10–15 years in a single "Earlier career" line rather than giving each one full bullets.
Executives: 2 pages (sometimes 3)
Director, VP and C-suite CVs stay at two pages in most markets, with board roles and selected achievements on page two. Three pages is accepted in parts of the Gulf for very senior candidates. See our executive CV guide.
CV Length by Country
Length conventions are tied to what each market expects a CV to contain. Here is how they compare across the markets we cover:
🇺🇸 United States
1 page (under ~10 years) · 2 pages (senior)One page is a strong norm for early and mid-career roles. No photo, date of birth or marital status. Federal resumes are a separate, much longer format.
🇨🇦 Canada
1–2 pagesSimilar to the US but two pages is more widely accepted for experienced candidates. No photo or personal details. Bilingual roles may need English and French versions.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
2 pages (standard) · 1 page (graduates)Two pages is the default for experienced professionals. No photo or date of birth. Academic and medical CVs run longer.
🇩🇪 Germany
1–2 pages (Lebenslauf) + cover letter + certificatesThe Lebenslauf is tabular and concise — typically 1–2 pages — but sits inside a full Bewerbungsmappe with cover letter and Zeugnisse. A professional photo is still common, though optional.
🇦🇪 UAE
2 pages (up to 3 for senior)Personal details section is common: nationality, visa status, and often a photo. Licences (DHA, DOH, MOHAP) and notice period are worth listing.
🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia
2 pages (up to 3 for senior)Personal details (nationality, Iqama status) expected; photo common. Professional registrations (SCFHS, Saudi Council of Engineers) take space. Bilingual CVs may run longer.
🇶🇦 Qatar
2 pagesSimilar to the UAE: personal details section, visa/sponsorship status and photo are common. QFC and government roles may ask for longer, more detailed CVs.
🇲🇦 Morocco
1 page (junior) · 2 pages (experienced)French-style CV conventions. Photo and état civil are common. Multinationals in Casablanca increasingly follow ATS-friendly, two-page formats.
🇩🇿 Algeria
1–2 pagesFrench-style conventions; national service status and photo are often included. Public sector applications may require more detail.
🇨🇳 China
1 page (Chinese) · 1–2 pages (English)Chinese-language resumes are typically one dense page, often with photo and personal details. English resumes for multinationals follow Western 1–2 page norms.
Why Gulf and German CVs work differently
In the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, CVs often include a personal details section — nationality, visa or Iqama status, date of birth, sometimes a photo — plus professional licences. That can take a third of a page, which is one reason two pages (and occasionally three for senior roles) is standard.
In Germany, the Lebenslauf itself is concise and tabular, but it is only one part of the application. The full Bewerbungsmappe includes a one-page cover letter (Anschreiben) and copies of certificates and employer references (Arbeitszeugnisse). See German CV vs English resume for a side-by-side comparison.
How to Cut a CV Down to Size
- Cut roles older than 10–15 years to a single line, or an "Earlier career" summary.
- Limit bullets to 3–6 for recent roles and 1–2 for older ones.
- Delete duties and keep achievements — see our achievement wording examples.
- Remove "References available on request" — it is assumed.
- Drop the objective statement in favour of a 3–4 line summary.
- Remove irrelevant hobbies unless they support the role.
- Tighten formatting: margins of 1.5–2cm, font size 10–11pt for body text, consistent spacing. Don't go below 10pt to squeeze content in.
When Two Pages Is the Wrong Answer
- Your second page has only a few lines — trim to one page or fill at least half of page two.
- You are applying in the US with under 5 years of experience.
- Page two repeats skills or duties already shown on page one.
- You have stretched content with large fonts, wide margins or double spacing.
Page one does the work
Whatever the total length, recruiters decide on page one. Your summary, most relevant role and the job's key keywords must all appear there.
FAQ: CV Length
How long should a resume be in 2026?
In the US and Canada, one page for under about 10 years of experience and two pages for senior professionals. In the UK, Europe and the Gulf, two pages is the standard CV length for most experienced candidates, and one page for graduates.
Is a two-page CV too long?
No. Two pages is the expected length in the UK, Ireland, Germany, the Gulf and most of Europe for anyone with a few years of experience. It is only "too long" if the second page is padding or if you are applying in the US with limited experience.
Can a CV be three pages?
Only in specific cases: academic CVs (which list publications), medical and clinical CVs, senior executive CVs with board roles, and federal or government applications in the US. For most other roles, three pages means you need to edit.
Should the second page of my CV be full?
Aim for at least half a page. A second page with only two or three lines looks like a formatting accident — either trim to one page or develop the content to fill at least half of page two.
Does CV length affect ATS?
Not directly. ATS platforms parse every page. Length matters for the human reader: recruiters scan the first page first, so your most relevant experience and keywords should appear there regardless of total length.
What is the difference between a CV and a resume in terms of length?
In the US, a "resume" is a short 1–2 page document and a "CV" is a long academic record. Everywhere else, "CV" simply means the standard 1–2 page job application document — the same thing Americans call a resume.
